Chapter 16

-Caleb-

I noticed that Lloyd left early this morning, and I don't need to go in at the charity office yet. That's why right now I'm roaming the house and reminiscing a little and dreaming about how this house will be mine one day soon. As I approach the door to my dad's office, I hesitate.

Since I was a kid, I spent a lot of time in my dad's office. I used to play on the floor while my dad worked. Sometimes a paper airplane would fly right in front of me, and I would laugh in surprise. Looking up, I would see Dad with his head down or hiding behind an open file.

When I accused him of throwing the airplane, he would say, "Wasn't me. Must have flown in through the window." He said that even when the window was closed. That kind of thing can still make me smile even as it brings tears to my eyes.

As a bigger kid, I would just hang out in Dad's office. Dad was really busy with all his philanthropic work, and I wanted to spend extra time with him. Later on I helped him out to try and take some of the pressure off.

Now that Lloyd has taken over the office, I've refused to set foot in there. I don't want to witness him sitting behind my father's desk.

Even now that I know he isn't in there, I won't go in. But one day soon that office and everything else in this house will be mine.

Mine. That thought turns my mind to Owen. With my mother and the baby to worry about, I'm still consumed with thoughts of my stepbrother. Being with him is like nothing else. It makes me understand why some people give up on their true mates.

But what we have isn't real. We're just using each other. I'm Owen's taste of freedom, a way to defy his father in secret.

For me it's the same. I like the idea of going after Lloyd's precious son, the one he wants to keep pure. But it's gone beyond that. Owen has a way of pulling me in, making me forget that he isn't what he seems, that he can never be mine.

I decide to get out of here and head out the front door. As soon as I open it, I see Owen sitting on the front steps. Coming up behind him, I wonder if he's waiting for someone. Maybe that alpha friend of his.

Instead of leaving, I sit down next to him. He is only a little startled, so he must have noticed me already.

"Caleb, what do you want?" he asks as I lean in and nuzzle his neck.

"Just your full, undivided attention," I tell him as my fingertips trace his jaw line and I guide him to turn and face me.

"I'm meeting someone," he tells me but doesn't turn away. His mouth is so luscious. I'm dying to kiss him, but first I want to find out if he's meeting that alpha.
